Harvest Operations

In 1981, Jim Watson started harvesting seed corn for Pioneer Hi-Bred, soon realizing the need for a more delicate approach to handling the seed. He shared his ideas with Byron Manufacturing and collaborated with their engineers to adapt a sweet corn harvester for the seed corn industry. After the prototype was developed, Jim conducted highly successful in-field trials of the new "husk-on" system, which went on to become the standard in seed corn harvesting operations globally.

Alongside husk-on harvesting, Watson was the first custom harvester to introduce track machines, tender carts, and walking-floor trailers to the North American seed corn industry. These innovative concepts were groundbreaking at the time, and today, this equipment has become the industry standard worldwide.
